"Gay" is a homosexual-friendly hip/slang term that emerged in America's pop-culture in the 70's.

"homosexuals have always existed throught various societies in about the same number, proportionally" => "there have always been gays"
Wrong. Not only did the word not exist, neither did the pop culture attitudes prevalent at the time it was coined. Few words for what is taken as gay behavior today existed in early American Colonial popular use, among them "sodomy", used in laws enacted for disease prevention (and moral censure as well). Juxtaposing "gays" with "sodomites", as if a gay community existed even in such a repressive social context, makes no sense except in a bizzare kind of way. (<=mark that something isn't Square; suspicion it was itended not to be.)
"Gays" weren't beat up, abused, harassed by the law in that context; that was happening, to the extent it actually was, to sodomists. Sodom and Gommorah had it worst.
WHAT GAY IS (<=what "gay" communicates)
I hadn't put this together except over Memorial holiday week-end, as one in a 4 part exposition of The Unconscious in Politics today - 6.2.11 It, together with anti-abortionist obsession with "baby killers" define(s) the two deepest common strata of trauma in indivual and group psychodynamic process: birth and sex.
The same template -- co-opt, redefine, reverse and (finally) kill -- can be traced to/in the ZIONAZI complex and Israel-U.S. relations.
GAY*, the sign-use, began as a pop culture term of use after the 60's, replacing "queer", "faggot", "homosexuals," "homo" as friendly, vrs antagonistic, toward homoerotica (male: lesbianism has an entirely different psychohistory). The erotic itself, through certainly not ignored throughout human history, has only recently, say the last century or so, come to be understood in hormonal, blood-chemistry-arousal terms, as opposed to introspection and intuition accompanying observed behavior. Attempt has been made to link self-observed attraction of males to other males to genetics, or brain modulation. Apart from being inherently dubious on its face, the mental attitude that cedes such external control over behavior is a paradigm of Sartre's 'false consciousness'. Data from that level, intellectually processed, simply isn't pertinent in deciding what to do. Many things need not affect consciousness unless allowed, that is, tolerated and/or encouraged. The effect on consciousness of thought is not limited to, though it includes, bio-neuro-psychological content. Who knows what bumps are on their, or any other person's, brain? The conduct of articulated, conscious behavior according to ideas communicated by commonly understood sign-use proceeds through an entirely different, and supervient (<=using results of prior) processes. To which grammar and logic apply.
Taking constructs such as "Gay" up into the grammar of common discourse, as denominating a group, claiming 'rights' against prejudice and discrimination, introduces:
FALSE* IDENTITY claim (*and not just; based on negating identity attributed by others)
Fabricating a FALSE HISTORICAL NARRATIVE OF ITSELF, a way of reading history that would redefine what others are called to accomodate them --"straight", "heterosexual", "man-woman marriage preference" (<- which, if insisted on in sacral terms, seques to "--prejudice", if not 'religious homophobia')
The final step, subversion of the life-cycle bond between parent-child, past-future, is taken by substituting 'same-sex' in the language of marriage between husband and wife. This negates the conscious bond sealed by "I do" between a couple and their biological child whose memory of fetal origins reconnect to it.

Jim Inhofe has witnessed brains coming out the left eye hole, blown away from a bullet through the ear to complete the effect. Not something Ernie Pyle, WWII reporter for America. would probably have seen up close, even by Nazis. But those in the WH Situation Room did. My comment on the Monkey Survey question "Do You Think the photos should be released?" was "(yes) maybe it would help those who feel as if their heads have been blown off by the U.S. government feel better to see it actually happened to bin Laden." (<=that squares the unconscious dream-thought)
My argument elsewhere (sidthomas.blogspot.com) is that the symbolism of units comprised of conjunction of opposites with text-token reversal, (~S/S*)^, is exemplified by S* = Killing bin Laden, as a collective meme. It also provides a form, or grammatical structure, to analyze the symbolic content, as psychosemioitcs does. Taken together, S* defines a New Event in TokenSpace, referentially idexed to the date, 5.1.11; with Archetypal historical enactment of enemy-conquering and essence-devouring war chief ritual; arranged somehoiw (?) to come about in such a manner that way words, signs, pictures and dream-scenes combine (grammar, in its broadest sense) discloses to intellectual perception an entirely distinct and independent psychodynamic narrative playing out.

Surely, this is hard to swallow all at once. The "Double Double" transition I see is mediated through a third, the transition from "CITY" to "NATION". "Tabloid City" by Pete Hamill; Little, Brown (278 pages, $26.99)
There's murder and mayhem in Pete Hamill's latest novel, "Tabloid City," but the real victim in his book is the print journalism that Hamill knows and loves so well. This ticking time bomb of a novel is about the end of a form of daily storytelling in which America's big cities are like small towns - their recognizable casts of characters, dramas and moral struggles playing out on a slightly bigger, more complex stage.
The book centers on the final publication night of the fictional New York World, the city's last afternoon newspaper. The ridiculously young publisher of the World, in his lack of wisdom, is turning the paper into a website.
"I'm being summoned to the palace by a twenty-eight-year-old. The dauphin. A kid who spent two summers here as an intern, couldn't get a fact straight," thinks Sam Briscoe, the World's 71-year-old veteran reporter who will quit when the new publisher tells him the news. Doesn't even have to think about it. Briscoe is a creature of the "world of paper itself, and ink, and trucks, and bundles dropped at newsstands. A world that is now shrinking. Under assault from digitalized artillery. The future? Yeah. The ... future."
This is not the book for readers who have spent the last decade saying that Web and print, blog and column can live happily together. Not that Briscoe is convinced anyone really cares if the paper goes the way of all flesh, "except the people who made the newspapers, the people he loved more than any others." But it's the world he's lived in, and wants to live in, until he dies.
Picture this night, the night of the novel, as a map of the city.
Hamill, the son of Irish immigrants, has been a New Yorker and a journalist all his life - a reporter for the New York Post, a columnist for the New York Herald Tribune and, briefly, the editor of the New York Post. Hamill moves around the city easily, with a great fondness reminiscent of the writing of Joseph Mitchell - the late New Yorker writer who is a sacred name at the intersection of New York journalism and literature.
Hamill populates his map with characters: men and women who work at the newspaper, homeless men, Islamic extremists, hedge fund swindlers, socialites, cleaning ladies. The map lights up with movement as Hamill's characters travel around New York, their lives intersecting in ways even they are unaware of.
Of course, this has been done before. Virginia Woolf's novel "Mrs. Dalloway" with the important personage in the back of a limousine driving through London while Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Smith walk the city's streets on a collision course as the hour of Clarissa's dinner party approaches; or the characters in Jay McInerney's "Bright Lights, Big City," whose disparate lives are tied together by the tabloid story of the Coma Baby; or Tom Wolfe's novel "The Bonfire of the Vanities" in which rich and poor wind around each other in common desperation. In all of these remarkable, urban books, the web grows tighter and tighter around the characters; the density reaches a pitch, a final event.
Hamill's novel is woven through with references to great writers and reporters, such as E.E. Cummings and Martha Gellhorn, witnesses to this and other centuries in American life. Hamill's characters (reporters, policemen and painters) have inherited a commitment to telling other people's stories, depicting other lives. The smell of the city room is not lost on the young reporter, Bobby Fonseca, as he bleakly contemplates his future. The road to Web world seems thin and wobbly by comparison, altogether less interesting than the disappearing universe of "Tabloid City."
There are many plotlines, and Hamill fishes with them all, but it is the story of the policeman searching for his long-lost son that drives the novel forward.
"What always happens at the end is death," Briscoe thinks, and he has reason to believe it. One by one, too many of the characters are murdered, commit suicide or die in car crashes - senseless deaths, every one.
The angry veteran from the war in Iraq who has lost his legs (and his wife and child) wants revenge, the suicide bomber with nothing left to lose wants to cleanse the world of sin, the cokehead in the BMW is on a path of self-destruction only he can understand. Briscoe and Helen Loomis and Fonseca have given their lives to tell these stories.
"Going to work where every single day it was something new," Fonseca recalls to his father, "some new story, where I could learn about people, and sudden death, and human pain. Not reading about them. Seeing them. Then telling their stories. I tried to explain to him, Dad, I don't want to be rich, I don't want to be famous, I want to be good. And he said, Why can't you be good at something like banking?"

Pete Hammill is a union of opposites, conjoining: A. Rich Man's pre-60's Tabloid New York , w/ b, mob-friendly City Street mentality reflected on P. 6 of the old NY POST, when it still reflected something of real life lived there. A "man among men", able to forge grammar for a narrative including all sectors of society, from The Street to Carenegie Hall via Yankee Stadium to Gracie Mansion, all in superb English American Tabloid style. Along with a few others, such as the I-Man Don Imus and George Carlin, one of the Real Deal definers of this mental strand. Class without sass, it might be put. He, and others of this genre, had already evolved beyond need to defend against put-downs. Reviews of his new novel "TABLOID CITY" relate that it is about a 28 yr old media whiz who has assumed control of an old newspaper and is taking it online, in effect dooming the Old Way it once communicated. (cf. Salon. The emergence of Hammill, the persona, with the message of transition from old-to-electronic-new tokens of TokenSpace, is the same process "doubled" on the Token side of consciousness, as identical with the process in the upper triad of Obama becoming Hero-sacrifice to Serpent God "doubling" the transition from snake-brain to mammalian mentality (reversed).
Surely, this is hard to swallow all at once. The "Double Double" transition I see is mediated through a third, the transition from "CITY" to "NATION". The content of the upper triad is Obama, as fetal hero, killing and consuming Osama, the split-off, projected Poisonous Placenta, blocking America's rebirth. The lower has Hammill, token of lower strand of the Old Above, handing that strand of Childless Fathers off to the New Below -- the generation of computer nerds, some of whom show signs of maturing autism. He is a master tokenist, constructing narrative to relate upper and lower registers of social discourse for the nation as a whole, which is awakening to its Ob/s/ama problem. This dyad is the Mix-opposite-ReMatch brought about by the blunder of burying Osama's body in the bosom of the sea, universal symbol of the Collective Unconscious. Hammill has re-entered the scene to tag us "TABLOID NATION", feasting on circuses and blood.

"Tabloid City" by Pete Hamill; Little, Brown (278 pages, $26.99)
There's murder and mayhem in Pete Hamill's latest novel, "Tabloid City," but the real victim in his book is the print journalism that Hamill knows and loves so well. This ticking time bomb of a novel is about the end of a form of daily storytelling in which America's big cities are like small towns - their recognizable casts of characters, dramas and moral struggles playing out on a slightly bigger, more complex stage.
The book centers on the final publication night of the fictional New York World, the city's last afternoon newspaper. The ridiculously young publisher of the World, in his lack of wisdom, is turning the paper into a website.
"I'm being summoned to the palace by a twenty-eight-year-old. The dauphin. A kid who spent two summers here as an intern, couldn't get a fact straight," thinks Sam Briscoe, the World's 71-year-old veteran reporter who will quit when the new publisher tells him the news. Doesn't even have to think about it. Briscoe is a creature of the "world of paper itself, and ink, and trucks, and bundles dropped at newsstands. A world that is now shrinking. Under assault from digitalized artillery. The future? Yeah. The ... future."
This is not the book for readers who have spent the last decade saying that Web and print, blog and column can live happily together. Not that Briscoe is convinced anyone really cares if the paper goes the way of all flesh, "except the people who made the newspapers, the people he loved more than any others." But it's the world he's lived in, and wants to live in, until he dies.
Picture this night, the night of the novel, as a map of the city.
Hamill, the son of Irish immigrants, has been a New Yorker and a journalist all his life - a reporter for the New York Post, a columnist for the New York Herald Tribune and, briefly, the editor of the New York Post. Hamill moves around the city easily, with a great fondness reminiscent of the writing of Joseph Mitchell - the late New Yorker writer who is a sacred name at the intersection of New York journalism and literature.
Hamill populates his map with characters: men and women who work at the newspaper, homeless men, Islamic extremists, hedge fund swindlers, socialites, cleaning ladies. The map lights up with movement as Hamill's characters travel around New York, their lives intersecting in ways even they are unaware of.
Of course, this has been done before. Virginia Woolf's novel "Mrs. Dalloway" with the important personage in the back of a limousine driving through London while Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Smith walk the city's streets on a collision course as the hour of Clarissa's dinner party approaches; or the characters in Jay McInerney's "Bright Lights, Big City," whose disparate lives are tied together by the tabloid story of the Coma Baby; or Tom Wolfe's novel "The Bonfire of the Vanities" in which rich and poor wind around each other in common desperation. In all of these remarkable, urban books, the web grows tighter and tighter around the characters; the density reaches a pitch, a final event.
Hamill's novel is woven through with references to great writers and reporters, such as E.E. Cummings and Martha Gellhorn, witnesses to this and other centuries in American life. Hamill's characters (reporters, policemen and painters) have inherited a commitment to telling other people's stories, depicting other lives. The smell of the city room is not lost on the young reporter, Bobby Fonseca, as he bleakly contemplates his future. The road to Web world seems thin and wobbly by comparison, altogether less interesting than the disappearing universe of "Tabloid City."
There are many plotlines, and Hamill fishes with them all, but it is the story of the policeman searching for his long-lost son that drives the novel forward.
"What always happens at the end is death," Briscoe thinks, and he has reason to believe it. One by one, too many of the characters are murdered, commit suicide or die in car crashes - senseless deaths, every one.
The angry veteran from the war in Iraq who has lost his legs (and his wife and child) wants revenge, the suicide bomber with nothing left to lose wants to cleanse the world of sin, the cokehead in the BMW is on a path of self-destruction only he can understand. Briscoe and Helen Loomis and Fonseca have given their lives to tell these stories.
"Going to work where every single day it was something new," Fonseca recalls to his father, "some new story, where I could learn about people, and sudden death, and human pain. Not reading about them. Seeing them. Then telling their stories. I tried to explain to him, Dad, I don't want to be rich, I don't want to be famous, I want to be good. And he said, Why can't you be good at something like banking?"

I just experienced how totally different 'realities' (*or "Heads", as flow of conscious content in which the Squaring function is distributed - S*3. A 60's *Idea) can replace each other in an instant, transiting from atunement to events mediated by early morning TV infotainment talk shows (CNN, MSNBC), to the same events recalled, thought about and written out. The difference was as distinct as high or not high (another 60's contribution), through also equally as distinct from that. It was a 'glimpse', a datum of self observation as undeniable as it was objective.
Slide into one reality (call it S*3vii,vi,v) and you can remain lost in it forever, life lived in a dream state originating from media sources squared on themselves.
Slide into the other (with altered personal narrative, not state; call it S*3iii,ii,i), and the first is distanced as an all-consuming uroboric totality, involuting on itself. But the glimpse is so quick, this fact about it can only be arrived at by extensive analytical reflection. The overwhelming impression was the (meta-) reality of the gap. I take it to have been metaphysical and call it "The Big Split". My work, since Vietnam, has been dedicated, to constructing an *Ideal language for narrating S*3iii,ii,i, the alternate side "what we are looking at." Devil's Advocate
DEVILS ADVOCATE
Could Major (?) Aiken, who (unsuccessfully) defended Mary Surratt against charges of plotting to kill Abraham Lincoln (in R. Redford's superb movie The Conspirators), be persuaded to defend Osama Laden, if he had been arrested and put on trial for the list of atrocities he is alleged to have committed?
I'll accept the challenge to play Aiken's role, even as in days of yore, as member of President Dearing's blue-ribbon panel that led to blocking military recruitment for the Vietnam war on Harpur College campus, 1968. We were the True American heroes then. Now, the same inner strain of staying True to America flows through and motivates defending Bin Laden, in a Square* Trial format: setting his message, now sealed by his mythic death, alongside now known facts. To do this is already very much, intellectually.

Bin Laden protested military arms in the Saudi Arabia (in Gulf War I) on religious grounds, as I recall, as constituting desecration of it's sacred desert sands. His aura of holiness, a clearly distinctive, highly evolved bloodline Archetype of The Sheik, is grounded in this soil (as Germany grounds Hitler's, and Italy Mussolini's). How did U.S. officials respond to this demand? Did rancor from this degradation partly fuel his hatred of the West? - complimenting anger in response to how the CIA had encouraged, then turned against, his militant pursuit of mujahadeen goals.

"He gave them what they had coming...landmark for landmark, eye-for-an-eye" => being-position #2

This is what can never be openly stated, as his message. "He has nothing to offer beyond hatred of the West," Giles Kepel decreed ("Bin Laden Was Dead Already" NYTimes, 5.8. week10) Tout Court. What cannot be pursued by "the West"'s MSM is the tale he could tell; to justify that hate. However, "the East", if that is the contrast, has its own media, now, and intra-Muslim, intra-Arab differences can come together around OBL's *Idea. If a * can be celebrated by allegedly civilized people, theArab/Muslim world -- those billions on that part of the planet whose bloodlines aligns with either -- will find unity at that very point of Bin Laden's message. It's as if the Navy SEALS were sent to confirn it. That is how "the West's" unconscious sees it; and how "the anti-West's" consciousness sees it. Through his systematic, unyielding confrontation -- morally, philosophically, theologically -- the message communicated by his very existence was not just exact existential repudiation of "the West"'s way-of-being ("existenz"); it's psychodynamic effect on that way of being was to make it expose itself by attacking him. He calls them snake brains (speaking figuratively); they respond as snake brains do, proving he was right. Such is the power of an *Idea reflecting the reverse, unconscious side of an involuted, self-defined group-totality. It was The *Idea in their own minds, judging them from within (as a Freudian super-ego), which they projectively personify as "Bin Laden" and attempt not just to kill but obliterate what he "stands for": the unconscious side of themselves.
Further: the act of killing Bin Laden was not only, psychodynamically, an attempt to obliterate a projection of their own unconscious as "enemy", but an attack on their own religious ideal, itself. There is, undoubtedly (I should say; each may judge for themself), a "Christic" aura in his visual presence. He IS his "message"; an embodied Word; a Christ, shedding his planetary body in death, but lifted to another plane of existence by it. There, it stands along side of Christ resurrected from Jesus' death; Easter Sunday just preceded. What they did unto Bin Laden they did also unto Christ, by the spirit they share in the unconscious. With OBL's body 'buried at sea" (symbol of the Unconscious, itself), the "Christic" return of his/their Spirit supplies higher Oxygen for the Arab Spring.

The American military might claim that they held on to bits of DNA samples of the corpse they say is Osama Bin Laden’s. They might claim that this is proof positive that he is dead. --add: and where is the proof the sample came from the one just killed (rather than old sample)
